There are lots of things to do in the Charlottesville area. For those who enjoy hiking, Crabtree Falls is a must! They are said to be the tallest waterfalls East of the Mississippi. The trail starts just over a beautiful hour drive from Arcady.
From the B&B, take I64 West to 29 South. Drive South on 29 until you turn right on 56 West just past the town of Lovingston. You will then take a slight right onto 151 North which is also keeping you on 56 West. Then you take a left hand turn to stay on 56 West and you’ll see the sign for Crabtree Falls hike on your left.
This hike is about 2 miles to the top and we strongly recommend sturdy sneakers or hiking boots as the trail can be rough in spots. As seen below, it starts out tame enough…
…then there are the stairs, some of which are steep.
As you can see in the next photo the trail gets very rocky at parts. Hence the importance of picking good shoes.
We have to point out that this is a relatively easy to medium hike. One in-shape 52 year old innkeeper did it the whole way without having to stop at all, while the other out-of-shape 62 year old innkeeper had to stop about 10 times on the way up for 15 second breaks to catch her breath. Of course there was the excuse of picture taking as well.
Another important point is to stay on the trail. There is a sign at the beginning of the trail pointing out that the rocks at the waterfalls have plant growth on them that make them very slippery which is very dangerous.
But it’s all well worth the hour to hour and a half hike up to the top where we had some fruit for a snack. The view is beautiful!
We recommend dinner at Dr. Ho’s Pizza on the way back to the inn! Delicious!
