10 Magical Fall Activities in and Around Charlottesville, VA

There’s something wonderfully unhurried about fall in Charlottesville, Virginia. Crisp mornings, Blue Ridge color, apple-laden orchards and bustling farmers’ markets make it a season to slow down and savor the simple pleasures of a beautiful place.

Beyond the autumn scenery, Charlottesville offers something for everyone, from seasonal wine experiences and local cuisine to outdoor adventures, scenic excursions, art and history. For the latest winery events and seasonal offerings, check individual establishments’ websites and social media, especially Instagram and Facebook.

Beyond Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, James Monroe’s Highland and James Madison’s Montpelier (which btw, has 8+ miles of well-marked walking trails) that are mentioned in our previous blogs, we’ve gathered some favorite ways to explore the region this fall. While renowned for its wineries and vibrant food scene, Charlottesville also offers plenty to discover beyond the glass. Be sure to check the attraction’s website for current hours and availability before you visit.

And at the end of the day, Arcady Vineyard Bed & Breakfast welcomes you back to your own peaceful vineyard retreat.

  1. Pick Apples at Carter Mountain Orchard

For over a century, the Chiles Family has tended their orchards, including longtime Best of C-VILLE favorite Carter Mountain Orchard, recognized locally for day trips and seasonal fun. Apple picking is a quintessential fall experience, and just 5 miles from Arcady, Carter Mountain makes it especially memorable. From the mountaintop, take in Charlottesville and Blue Ridge views while wandering the orchard in search of the perfect apple. Apple picking runs mid-August through mid-December, with pumpkins, gourds, fresh cider, apple cider donuts and other seasonal favorites.

For fall 2026, Carter Mountain is open daily, with weekend admission passes required on select peak weekends from September through mid-November. For a more relaxed visit, consider visiting on a weekday.

And yes, the apple cider donuts are every bit as tempting as they sound.

Arcady tip: Pair Carter Mountain with a morning at Monticello or an afternoon exploring the nearby countryside. It’s close enough to Arcady that you can be back at the inn before sunset.

  1. Discover Other Charlottesville-Area Orchards

If you love the idea of an apple-picking afternoon, there are other orchards worth adding to your fall itinerary. Approximately 20 miles from Arcady Vineyard Bed & Breakfast is the Chiles Peach Orchard located in neighboring Crozet, VA. Despite its name, Chiles Peach Orchard becomes an apple destination in autumn. The family-owned farm offers pick-your-own apples, pumpkins, hayrides, seasonal treats and a farm market filled with ready picked fruits and veggies, homemade ice cream and other locally made goods.

Apple picking is available into November, and October 2026 weekend apple-picking dates require an Apple Orchard Pass.

If you’re looking for a quieter, more traditional orchard experience, Henley’s Orchard is another option. Located in Crozet, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge, Henley’s Orchard is approximately 20 miles from Arcady Vineyard Bed & Breakfast. The family-owned orchard dates to 1932 and grows more than 25 varieties of apples, with apple season extending from late July into November.

The farm store and Orchard Boutique also make it a nice stop for taking a little taste of Virginia home with you.

Arcady tip: Apple availability changes as different varieties ripen, so check the orchard’s picking information before heading out.

  1. Go Leaf-Peeping in the Blue Ridge

Fall foliage is one of the biggest reasons to visit Charlottesville in the fall through early November. For 2026, current regional forecasts suggest that higher elevations should begin changing first, with peak color generally progressing into the Charlottesville area through October and early November. Exact timing depends on weather, elevation and rainfall, so flexibility is part of the fun.

Here are three beautiful options within roughly 45 minutes of Arcady:

Humpback Rocks & the Blue Ridge Parkway

Located in Afton, VA heading west 30-35 minutes away, is the Blue Ridge Parkway which offers scenic mountain vistas and changing hardwood forests. Humpback Rocks offers one of the area’s most dramatic overlooks, while simply driving the Parkway can be just as rewarding if you’d rather keep your fall outing leisurely.

Rockfish Gap & Shenandoah National Park

Located approximately 35-40 minutes from Arcady Vineyard, in Waynesboro/Afton, VA is Rockfish Gap & the southern entrance to Shenandoah National Park. Known for its scenic beauty, the Rockfish Gap area provides an easy gateway toward Shenandoah National Park, which offers stunning views, hiking trails, and access to the Blue Ridge Parkway. The park is recognized for its natural landscapes and outdoor recreational opportunities, making it a popular destination for nature lovers and those who enjoy the spirit of the fall.

To explore the stunning vistas of Shenandoah National Park, a standard entrance pass for a private vehicle typically costs $30 and is valid for seven consecutive days (note, the park does not accept cash). The park offers several fee-free days throughout the year, including dates like Memorial Day, Independence Day weekend, and Veterans Day.

Arcady tip: Higher elevations generally turn earlier than Charlottesville, making this a useful option when the leaves around town haven’t quite reached their peak.

Carter Mountain

You’re not seeing double. In addition to its plentiful orchards for apple picking, nearby Carter Mountain sits high above Charlottesville, offering breathtaking views across the valley and surrounding countryside. It’s a natural pairing of quintessential fall fun and beautiful scenery.

Arcady tip: Ask us about the current foliage when you arrive. We can help you choose a scenic drive or outing based on what is actually happening in the landscape that week.

  1. Take a Scenic Train Ride Through Virginia

For a different way to experience the fall landscape, drive to historic Staunton, about 45–50 miles from Arcady Vineyard, and board the Virginia Scenic Railway. Its excursions blend historic charm, cultural attractions and scenic beauty, from vibrant downtowns to picturesque landscapes and outdoor adventures.

Several three-hour excursions depart from Staunton:

The regular Blue Ridge Flyer and Alleghany Special generally run on select Thursday-through-Sunday dates, whilecspecialty experiences are offered on specific scheduled dates. Check the railway’s calendar for current availability.

How far ahead should you book?

As soon as your plans are firm. The railway recommends booking at the first opportunity because seats can fill quickly. Its schedule is released approximately three months at a time, and reservations close Wednesday’s at 4:00 pm for rides taking place that upcoming weekend. Same-day reservations are not accepted. .

For a fall weekend, this is one experience we’d put near the top of your planning list.

  1. Step Back in Time on the James River

For a memorable blend of history, nature and something you won’t find everywhere, head about 25 miles south to Scottsville, Virginia. The James River Batteau Company operates historic-style replica batteaux, recreating the flat-bottomed boats once used to carry goods along Virginia’s shallow rivers.

The River Cruise combines two hours of historical storytelling, live acoustic music and a riverside charcuterie spread. Sunset Cruises offer an especially beautiful way to experience the river, and private cruises are also available.

New for 2026, Riverside Gatherings and Farm to Batteau add dinner, live music and fireside lingering at a private riverside property in Scottsville.

The company operates Thursday through Sunday, seasonally from spring through the end of October. Due to the outdoor nature of this experience, cruises may be cancelled due to adverse weather conditions. Stay connected to the James River Batteau Company for the latest.

How far ahead should you book?

Book as soon as you know your preferred date, especially in fall. Reservations are required, with a seven-day cancellation/rescheduling policy.

This is a wonderful way to experience a quieter, less-touristy side of Central Virginia.

Fall is a wonderful time to explore Charlottesville’s farmers markets, not just for produce, but for locally made foods, crafts and gifts.

The exhibitions run through January 3, 2027, making them available throughout the fall. One featured exhibition, Georges Adéagbo: Thomas Jefferson and the Legacies of Independence, brings together archives, found objects and newly created works for a global perspective on Jefferson and changing ideas of independence.

Beyond its changing exhibitions, the Fralin is known for its permanent collection spanning American, European, African and Native American art, offering plenty to discover throughout the museum.

It’s an especially nice choice for a cooler or rainy fall afternoon and a refreshing change of pace from the vineyards.

Home to more than 3,600 works, the most significant collection of its kind outside Australia, Kluge-Ruhe is known for its contemporary Indigenous Australian art and close relationships with artists and communities.
